Russian peacekeepers will be deployed in Nagorno-Karabakh after peace deal

The Russian Defense Ministry announced that Russian peacekeeping deployments continue to establish their positions in Nagorno-Karabakh, while the exact role Turkey will play remains unclear.

Iran PressEurope: According to the Russian Defense Ministry, a total of 1,960 peacekeepers, 90 armored personnel carriers, and 380 vehicles and pieces of special equipment will be sent to Nagorno-Karabakh.

The Russian peacekeepers will be deployed to the region for a period of five years but this term may be automatically extended for additional five-year periods, if necessary, the Tass news agency reported quoting the document on the Kremlin’s website.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan asked parliament Monday to authorize sending soldiers to Azerbaijan to establish a 'peacekeeping center' with Russia. Russia has repeatedly said that no Turkish troops will be on the ground as part of the deal — a factor that would inevitably be met with fierce resistance from Yerevan.
