Rome (IP) - The opposition parties of the Italian government protested the approval of the controversial bill of Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni.

Iran PressEurope: The Italian Senate approved a government bill that allows the direct election of the country’s leader like in the US and France.

The bill that was approved 109 - 77, with one abstention, will head to the lower chamber of parliament.

Concurrent with the approval of the bill in the Senate, on Tuesday evening, the leaders of the opposition parties and hundreds of their supporters demonstrated and gathered in the center of Rome, the capital of Italy.

The bill must also be approved by the Chamber of Deputies.

The leaders of the opposition parties described the action of the Italian government against the constitution.

According to the opponents of the Meloni government, if the bill is approved in the Chamber of Deputies, a referendum should be held in Italy.

During the review of the local government bill, a brawl broke out in Italy’s parliament on Wednesday (12 June), resulting in the apparent injury of one MP who had to leave the chamber in a wheelchair.

Leonardo Donno, a 5-Star Movement lawmaker, had been trying to hand a flag to far-right League’s minister for regional affairs, Roberto Calderoli, during a discussion on the controversial government bill concerning local autonomies.

Shortly after parliamentary clerks stopped Mr Donno, chaos ensued as other lawmakers approached him and scuffles broke out.

League MP Igor Iezzi threw punches towards Mr Donno, who eventually fell and was taken out of the chamber in a wheelchair.

Speaking to local media, he said he was taken to hospital for health checks and announced that he would sue his aggressor.

The Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies suspended the parliamentary activity of several representatives for 7 to 15 days.
