Iran Press/ Middle East: The Kuwaiti government headed by Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah on Monday submitted its resignation to Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, according to local media.
According to a source in the Kuwaiti government, cabinet member led by Prime Minister Al-Khalid Al-Sabah decided to resign following today's cabinet meeting, Al-Qabas newspaper reported.
The resignation came as several opposition lawmakers sought to question the Prime Minister and other ministers on main issues, including corruption and the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The government was formed in March after the previous cabinet of Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah resigned in January.
The prolonged feud has paralyzed legislative work, hindered efforts to boost state finances which were hit hard last year by low oil prices and the pandemic.
Political deadlock in the oil-rich country in the Persian Gulf has led to government reshuffles and dissolutions of parliament for decades.
On Sunday, Sheikh Nawaf granted an amnesty to opposition political members in part to resolve the ongoing deadlock in the country's government.
The state-run KUNA news agency said Kuwait's ruler, Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah, received the government's resignation notice but did not say whether Emir would accept the resignation.
Kuwait's unusual combination of an emir-appointed government and elected parliament frequently gives rise to wrangling that analysts say impedes the country's economic and social progress. The parliament can introduce legislation and question ministers, though the country's Emir retains ultimate authority and ruling family members hold senior posts.
