In a memorial ceremony for the martyrs of public service, including the former president and his companions, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian sharply criticized Western double standards. He called out global powers for labeling Iranian figures as looters while engaging in large-scale exploitation themselves.

Why it matters:

By directly addressing President Trump, Pezeshkian confronts the Western narrative used to justify sanctions and pressure on Iran, accusing Trump and his allies of hypocrisy.

What he's saying:

"Those who themselves plunder the world call our beloved ones looters," Pezeshkian stated during the memorial. Referring to the sacrifices of public servants who lost their lives, he emphasized their honesty, tireless work ethic, and the dignity of their often-unseen lives. “We often say they were tireless, which they were. They worked sincerely, which they did. But what’s often not seen is their way of life,” he said.

He criticized President Donald Trump’s statements made during a trip to Saudi Arabia, where Trump accused Iranian officials of corruption. Pezeshkian added, “They (those who accuse Iranian officials of corruption) can see how Iranian officials live, then they say whether these have committed theft or not,” Pezeshkian declared. “The master thieves of the planet, who plunder and rob nations, are the ones accusing others of looting.”
