IP - Mudslides, a seasonal natural disaster in Ethiopia on Monday killed at least 157 people on Tuesday, while the exact casualties are unknown because many people remained unaccounted for after another bigger Mudslides covered people trying to rescue others.

Iran PressAfrica: The death toll from 55 on late Monday was raised to 157 people on Tuesday as rescue operations were underway in the area of Gofa in southern Ethiopia.

Gofa Zone is the administrative area where the mudslides occurred.

Many of the victims were killed as they tried to rescue survivors of an earlier mudslide.

Landslides are common during Ethiopia's rainy season, which started in July and is expected to last until mid-September.

Gofa zone is roughly 450km from the capital Addis Ababa, a drive of about 10 hours.

Ethiopia, the second most populous country in Africa with around 120 million people, is highly vulnerable to climate disasters including flooding and drought.
