Nigeria (IP) - At least 10 civilians were killed in airstrikes on two villages in Sokoto State of North Western Nigeria on Wednesday.

Iran Press/Africa: According to the locals, the Nigerian Air Force jet bombed Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities in the Silame Local Government Area, killed 10 civilians, and caused many other people injured.

"Instead of targeting Lakurawa terrorists, the fighter jet dropped explosives on the innocent civilians and at least 10 people were killed," Muhammad Bilal, a resident of Sokoto told Iran Press correspondent via a phone call.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State, who visited the villages where the said incidents happened, condoled the families of the victims and said the attack was a mistake.

"It wasn’t a deliberate act by the security operatives. They were actually targeting the invading terrorists. They succeeded in neutralizing them during the first and the second attempts of the operation. It was the third operation that went awry," the Governor said.

The Nigerian military is known for killing civilians while fighting against terrorists. In December 2023, more than 100 civilians were killed in an airstrike on Tudun Biri village in Kaduna State.
