A fire in Los Angeles has resulted in the loss of five lives, with US officials anticipating a potential increase in the death toll.

Wildfires raging around Los Angeles extended to the Hollywood Hills, following previous fires in the region that resulted in the loss of at least five lives, the destruction of numerous homes, and strained firefighting resources and water reserves.

Over 100,000 individuals were instructed to evacuate as strong, dry winds impeded firefighting efforts and facilitated the spread of the fires across dry terrain. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass described the situation as a significant firestorm during a press conference held upon her return from Ghana, where she had cut short an official trip.

A new fire erupted in the Hollywood Hills later that evening, as reported by Fire Chief Kristin Crowley during a press briefing, prompting additional evacuations and bringing the total number of wildfires in Los Angeles County to six. State officials indicated that four of these fires remained uncontained, including two major blazes on the city's eastern and western perimeters that continued to grow as night descended on Wednesday.
