IP - According to the Residents of Gaza the overnight strikes were the heaviest yet in nine days of conflict. Many houses were flattened and the death toll rose inexorably.

Authorities in Gaza said at least 2,750 people had so far been killed by the Israeli strikes, a quarter of them children, and nearly 10,000 wounded.

A further 1,000 people were missing and believed to be under rubble.

Israeli aircraft bombed areas around Gaza City's Al-Quds hospital early on Monday and ambulances at the facility were unable to move due to the strikes, Palestinian media reported.

On Monday, the Israeli Military announced that it carried out dozens of strikes in the Gaza Strip in the last few hours.

It claimed that the targets have included Hamas headquarters, mortar launching positions, and a number of military compounds, according to the IDF.

As Israeli troops massed on the border with Gaza, an Egyptian-controlled crossing into the enclave is expected to reopen amid diplomatic efforts to get aid to the millions of Palestinians besieged there after Hamas' rampage through Israeli border towns.

Top U.S. officials warned that the war between Israel and Hamas could escalate, as American warships headed to the area amid growing clashes on Israel's northern border with Lebanon.

Thousands of Palestinians have evacuated Gaza City for southern areas of the enclave, after Israel's warnings. Hamas has asked them to stay put.
