Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations said that the Iranian people will never forget the assistance of some Western states to former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s regime in its systematic use of chemical weapons against Iranians during the imposed war in the 1980s.

Iran Press/America: Amir Saeed Irvani, on Monday at the Security Council meeting regarding the Syrian chemical case, added: "As the main victim of chemical weapons, the Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns the use of chemical weapons by anyone, in any place and under any circumstances."

The Iranian envoy said that his country, as a main victim of chemical weapons, believes that the use of such weapons violates international law and is a crime against humanity, while it constitutes a threat to international peace.

Iranian diplomat added: "Our people will never forget the role that some Western countries played in assisting the Saddam regime in the systematic use of chemical weapons against the Iranian people during Iraq's imposed war against Iran. Some Western countries either remained silent or were complicit in such atrocities. Because of their harmful actions and double standards, the UN Security Council was unable to carry out its based charter duties to take effective action to hold perpetrators accountable for such atrocious crimes."

Iravani also said: "It is disturbing to see these double standards and detrimental practices continue to persist, as evidenced by the politicization of the Convention and the OPCW for short-sighted political gain. Such an approach not only risks creating divisions among member states but also undermines the credibility and legitimacy of the disarmament machinery."

Irvani further said: "Damascus fulfills its obligations based on the convention and continues to cooperate with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons."

He added: "In addition, the Syrian government regularly submits monthly reports to the Director General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons."

Iran's senior diplomat at the United Nations continued: "Iran supports a constructive dialogue between Syria and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons at the highest level, with a specific time frame for solving the remaining issues and finally resolving the case." 219
