Tehran (IP) - The Russian ambassador in Tehran announced the holding of joint naval drills by Iran, Russia, and China between late 2021 and early 2022 in the waters of the Persian Gulf.

In an interview with Sputnik news agency, Levan Jagarian said: "At the end of this year or the beginning of next year, this joint naval exercise will be held in the Persian Gulf. Russian, Iranian, and Chinese warships will take part in the exercise. The main purpose of this exercise is to practice measures to ensure international maritime security and counter-piracy."

He added: "Apart from Russia, Iran, and China, countries such as India, Syria, and Venezuela will also participate in this exercise."

Russia also supports Iran's application for membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, quoting the Russian ambassador in Tehran.

The Russian ambassador in Tehran also noted that Russia and Iran are negotiating on weapons.

He said that after lifting the UN arms embargo against Iran, Tehran and Moscow are holding talks on the sale of a wide range of weapons.
