(IP)- Iran's interior minister arrived in Baghdad on an official visit and was welcomed by his Iraqi counterpart.

Iran PressMiddle East: Iran's Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi arrived at Baghdad Airport on an official visit today (Tuesday) and was welcomed by Iraq's Interior Minister Abdul Amir Al-Shammari.

"In the meeting between the Iraqi and Iranian interior ministers, the deepening of brotherly relations between the two countries was emphasized and the two sides discussed issues of interest," according to the office of the Iraqi Interior Minister.

"More than 2.5 million Iranians have entered Iraq to participate in the Arbaeen procession," according to Iran's interior minister.

Omar Adnan Al-Waeli, head of the Iraqi Border Crossings Authority, said that the number of pilgrims is expected to be higher compared to previous years.

Iranian interior minister also appreciated the Iraqi officials' support in facilitating the movement of pilgrims during his visit to the Khosravi and Manzaria borders last Friday night.  

Last year, according to the statistics of the Secretariat of the Holy Shrine of Abbasi in Karbala City, 21 million 198 thousand 640 people had entered the city until the Day of Arbaeen.

It is expected that this year more than four million Iranian pilgrims will go to Karbala to attend the Arbaeen procession.

20 Safar 1445 Hijri (September 6, 2023), is the Arbaeen of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (A.S.), the third Imam of the Shiites, and his faithful companions in the desert of Karbala.

On this day, pilgrims enter the city of Karbala in the south of Iraq to attend the Arbaeen procession.
