  • Iran's stance on Nagorno-Karabakh region has not changed: FM Spox

Tehran (IP) - Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran's stance on the Nagorno-Karabakh region between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan has not changed.

Iran Press/Iran News: Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi in response to a question regarding the stance of the Islamic Republic of Iran towards the Nagorno-Karabakh region said: "Our stance on the disputed area in Nagorno-Karabakh between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan has not changed."

While stressing the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries and the use of methods for the peaceful settlement of disputes,  Mousavi added: "We believe that these two neighboring countries must resolve their dispute peacefully, and the Islamic Republic of Iran has always stated its readiness to assist in resolving this dispute."

Armenia and Azerbaijan thus remain officially at war over Nagorno-Karabakh and the dispute is a major source of tension in the South Caucasus region wedged between Iran, Russia, and Turkey.

No country officially recognizes Karabakh as an independent state.

Upper Karabakh – also known as Nagorno-Karabakh, has been controlled by ethnic Armenians since it broke free of Baku's control after a fierce war in the early 1990s that killed 30,000 people.
