Tehran (IP) - The Iranian government in a statement on Wednesday reacted to Ismail Haniyeh’s assassination in Tehran as "another page to the black records of the criminal and usurping Zionist regime" and declared three days of national mourning.

Iran Press/Iran news: "Assassination of a diplomatic guest of the Islamic Republic of Iran in its territory is a violation of all international rules and human principles," the statement added

"This criminal action exposed the terrorist nature of the regime and the fact that no one on earth is immune from the regime’s evil acts," it added.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, the head of the political bureau of the Palestinian Resistance Movement Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, and one of his bodyguards were killed when their residence was targeted in Tehran, according to a statement released by the IRGC.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has said that the Islamic Republic of Iran views it as a duty to take vengeance for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh on its soil.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian vowed that the "terrorist occupiers" will regret their "cowardly actions." 

In a message posted on X on Wednesday morning, Pezeshkian emphasized Iran's commitment to defending its territorial integrity and national honor.
