Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi

Tehran (IP) - Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi called the recent US move to sanction international nuclear cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran a clear violation of UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2231 and the UN Charter and strongly condemned it.

Iran Press/Iran News: Mousavi added, "This action ignores Iran's obvious rights and disrupts the international public order."

The spokesman stressed: "Iran has closely monitored the technical and political effects of this action, and if it has a negative impact on Iran's nuclear rights, it will take the necessary practical and legal steps."

US President Trump unilaterally withdrew the United States from the nuclear deal in 2018 and has re-imposed harsh and illegal sanctions on Iran.

The New York Times on May 27 revealed a US ploy to pressure the United Nations Security Council to extend an arms embargo on Tehran, which is due to expire in October.

Now the issue is a UN Security Council resolution that was passed in 2015 in support of the nuclear deal between Iran and several world powers.

Under the resolution, an arms embargo on Iran, as well as an arms export ban, is set to lift Oct. 18. The resolution also said travel restrictions on officials and entities involved in Iran’s nuclear and missile programs will expire in October.

However, a renewal of the arms embargo is likely to meet opposition from Russia and China, which have veto power in the Security Council.
