Iran Press/America: Right-wing leader Hernandez announced the embassy move in August and a month later opened a commercial office in the city of al-Quds (Jerusalem) as an extension to Honduras' Tel Aviv-based embassy.
Moving an embassy to al-Quds (Jerusalem) is highly contentious. Israel claims all of al-Quds as its capital, while Palestinians view East al-Quds as the capital of their future state, AFP reported.
"We're just waiting for Israel, reciprocally as is appropriate diplomatically, to open its office in Tegucigalpa and we'll be transferring our embassy to Jerusalem (al-Quds)," said Hernandez.
Hernandez's statement came as Honduras took possession of a warship worth more than $50 million bought from Israel.
Traditionally, most diplomatic missions in the occupied territories have been in Tel Aviv as countries maintained a neutral stance over the status of the city of al-Quds.
Israel is currently represented in Honduras by its Guatemala embassy.
Guatemala was one of the first countries to follow the lead of US President Donald Trump when he moved his country's embassy to Jerusalem (al-Quds), sparking a rift between Washington and the Palestinian self-rule authority.
The United States officially opened its embassy in the city of al-Quds on 14 May 2018, as Israeli forces killed dozens of Palestinian protesters.
The Arab League has said US President Donald Trump's decision to recognize al-Quds as Israel’s capital would only boost extremism, fanaticism, and violence, and not serve the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
