France rejects US anti-Iranian proposal

France's permanent representative to the United Nations, in a clear response to a proposal to extend Iran's arms embargo, stressed the need to maintain JCPOA and called it a key to the non-proliferation regime.

Iran Press/America: Nicholas de Riviere wrote on his Twitter page on Thursday: "Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) plays a key role in maintaining the non-proliferation regime and ensuring that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon.

As the deadline for lifting UN arms sanctions against Iran, which is part of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, approaches, the Americans have redoubled their efforts to prevent the sanctions from being lifted.

The United States withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) two years ago, without regard to Security Council Resolution 2231.

However, in a new legal interpretation, the US claims that according to the provisions of this resolution, it is still one of the participants in the JCPOA and in this context, US has the right to use the mechanisms mentioned in this agreement, including the trigger mechanism for the return of sanctions against Iran.

The Trump administration has backed away from a hardline resolution on Iran that risked alienating UN Security Council allies, and will instead present a “clean” version to extend an arms embargo due to expire in October.

The new proposed US resolution made public on Wednesday, comprised four terse paragraphs in place of the earlier 13-page draft circulated among members.

Despite the changes, Security Council members were still expected to reject the effort.
