Iran Press/Iran news: In a ceremony, on Saturday held at Shahid Beheshti University an Iranian-produced artificial bone was officially unveiled with the presence of the university chancellor Muhammad Aghajani.
Delivering a speech, the chancellor said that despite US sanctions, Iran has made great medical and scientific achievements in the world, Iran Press reported.
Artificial bone refers to bone-like material created in laboratories that can be used in bone grafts, to replace human bone that is lost due to severe fractures, diseases or defects present at birth.
Already five patients with jaw and leg bone defects have been treated with the artificial bone and fortunately are under recovery, Aghajani said.
Arash Khojaste, an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon and the principal investigator (PI) of Artificial Bone, who also attended the ceremony said "What we achieved during ten years is a biomaterial. It is very similar to that of the original bone, collagen, which improves the bio-compatibility of the implant."
The artificial bone can be used in the treatment or cure of cancerous diseases, tumors and post-natal defects which are otherwise very difficult or impossible to treat. 101/211/215
