Iran Press/Iran news: According to the statement on Sunday, the Islamic Republic of Iran believes that a lasting peace agreement in Afghanistan can only be achieved through inter-Afghani dialogue with the participation of its political groups including the Taliban with paying attention to Afghanistan's neighboring states' considerations.
The statement further emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes any developments that contribute to peace and stability in Afghanistan and supports the efforts being made under Afghan leadership and ownership and highlighted: "The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that the presence of foreign troops in Afghanistan is illegal and is one of the main reasons for the war and insecurity there. The withdrawal of these forces is essential to achieving peace and security in Afghanistan, and any action that would provide the ground for the withdrawal of these forces will contribute to peace in the country."
Iran's Foreign Ministry described the US actions as an attempt to legitimize the presence of its troops in Afghanistan, stating: "Iran opposes these actions and the United States has no legal standing to sign a peace agreement or determine the future of Afghanistan."
"We believe that the United Nations has the appropriate capacity to facilitate inter-Afghan negotiations, as well as to monitor and ensure the implementation of the agreements reached. The Islamic Republic of Iran, while respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Afghanistan, is ready to provide any assistance in establishing peace, stability, and security in Afghanistan in line with its national security strategy. We hope that a government in Afghanistan will be established that has friendly and fraternal relations with its neighbors and can eradicate terrorism."
The US and Taliban have signed an agreement Saturday, which would set into motion the drawdown of US troops from Afghanistan and potentially pave the way to ending America's longest-fought war.
