Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi expressed the hope that bilateral relations with Algeria will develop into deeper ties as the new president assumes the office.

Iran Press/Africa: He made the remarks in a statement published on the Foreign Ministry's website on Saturday to congratulate the Algerian nation and government on presidential elections in the north African Arab country.

Algeria’s Independent Elections Committee has confirmed the former premier Abdelmadjid Tebboune as the president-elect winning 58.15 percent of votes.

The successful presidential elections on Friday were an important step to realize democracy, development, and prosperity in a calm atmosphere, Mousavi said.

The Friday's polls were held following mass protests which led to the resignation of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika in April who had held power for two decades.

The Iranian diplomat hoped that relations between Tehran and Algiers will expand and become deeper in the new era.
