Iran's Vice President for Science and Technology and the mayor of the Iranian capital of Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding on Sunday to identify the urban areas to establish innovation centers.

Iran Press/Iran news: Iran's Vice President for Science and Technology Sorena Sattari and the mayor of the Iranian capital of Tehran Pirouz Hanachi signed a memorandum of understanding on Sunday to identify the urban areas to establish innovation centers and to launch the Innovation Centers for Advanced Technologies of Transportation.

Sattari said that Tehran has a good potential for turning to a smart city, highlighting the significant role of the knowledge-based companies in solving urban problems besides creating jobs and added value.

"So an ecosystem is required to turn the potential to an innovative business empowered by the youth's creativity and can produce wealth and employment out of urban problems," he said.

The vice president for science and technology stressed the improvement of innovative centers as one of the factors required for a smart Tehran and said by investing in these areas, the private sector can help generate revenue besides solving the city's problems regarding creating jobs.

"The Azadi (freedom) Innovation Factory is one of the prominent examples of these centers, which has managed to provide employment for over 3,500 creative young people, paving the way to solve urban problems and create innovation from the worn-out places," he elaborated.

Tehran's mayor Pirouz Hanachi for his part introduced the development of electronic vehicles or those with low pollution and the identification of the areas having the potential to turn to innovative centers as the two axes of the mentioned MoU.

According to the MoU, a study has been conducted to identify those areas of Tehran's potential to become innovation centers as well as prepare the grounds to equip and transform their usage into innovation centers, Tehran mayor stated.

"Tehran has very good capacities to improve and be placed at the forefront of smart cities, and with the identification and operationalization of these centers, the capital's move towards progress and smartness will continue at a faster pace," Hanachi said.

Noting that currently a number of the potential areas have been identified in a piloting way, Tehran's mayor said; " By employing young, clever, and creative labor force, we try to solve the urban problems and move Tehran toward an innovative city."
