International Mathematical Union (IMU) has designated the birthday of Iranian maths genius Maryam Mirzakhani as 'Women's Day in Mathematics'.

Iran Press/Iran news: Today is the birthday of the first woman in the world and also the first Iranian woman to win the highest honour and prize in mathematics -- the prestigious Fields medal.

Maryam Mirzakhani was born on 12 May 1977 and won the Fields medal (the highest honour a mathematician can receive) when she was 37 years old.

On this occasion, the International Mathematical Union (IMU) has designated her birthday as 'Women's Day in Mathematics', Iran Press reported.

Mirzakhani was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013. In 2016, the cancer spread to her bones and liver, and she died on 14 July 2017 at the age of 40.
