US sanctions; destructive virus in international relations

Deputy Director of Iran's High Council for Human Rights described unilateral US sanctions as a significant example of malicious US viruses in international law and international relations.

Iran PressEurope: Majid Tafreshi, at a meeting with Japan's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva Ken Okaniwa on Sunday, referred to US secondary sanctions against Iran, describing them as "malicious US viruses in international law and international relations".

Ever since quitting the multilateral 2015 nuclear deal with Iran in May 2018, US President Donald Trump has been running what he refers to as a “maximum pressure” of sanctions against Tehran.

The American sanctions target both Iran and its international partners, including European countries that seek to engage in trade with the Islamic Republic.

So-called secondary sanctions target foreign companies that do business with Iran. Affected countries, including China, say those bans violate their sovereignty because their bilateral interactions with Iran are targeted by a third country, namely the US.

Tafreshi stressed the need for the continuation of bilateral legal and judicial talks and the need to end the exploitation of the Human Rights Council.

Ken Okaniwa, for his part, referred to the 90th year of Iran-Japan political relations and good relations between the two countries and emphasized Japan's efforts to avoid politicizing human rights issues and his willingness to continue legal and judicial talks with Iran.

Deputy Director of Iran's High Council for Human Rights, who is attending the 43rd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, had earlier met with ambassadors and representatives of countries who participated in the meeting. He had called not to exploit human rights resolutions against nations.

The 43rd session of the Human Rights Council is underway in Geneva Switzerland started on February 24 and will last until March 20.
