Iran Press/ Europe: Russia will not stop fighting terrorism in Syria's Idlib region in order to solve Europe's migration crisis, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday 3 March at a news conference alongside his Finnish counterpart in Helsinki.
According to Reuters, Turkey last week said it would no longer stop Syrian refugees, displaced by the fighting in Idlib, from reaching Europe by land and sea.
A million people have been displaced since December near Turkey’s southern border, causing what the United Nations says may be the worst humanitarian crisis in nine years of war.
In recent days, the Syrian army has managed to liberate several areas and villages in the south and east of Idlib province. The province of Idlib is the last base of terrorists in Syria.
Syrian Army has reclaimed significant territory since launching a stepped-up offensive in December, including areas around some of the Turkish military posts in Idlib.
That has led to a series of confrontations, including deadly clashes this week that saw government shelling kill five Turkish troops.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has threatened the Syrian government, saying the offensive violates a 2018 deal with Russia meant to prevent a broad military operation.
