Amnesty International said that unprecedented investigation reveals US-led Coalition killed more than 1,600 civilians in Raqqa ‘death trap’.

Iran Press/Europe: Amnesty International said that U.S.-led forces killed 1,600 civilians during the fight to get ISIS out of the Syrian city of Raqqa.

More than 1,600 civilian lives lost as a direct result of thousands of US, UK and French air strikes and tens of thousands of US artillery strikes in the Coalition’s military campaign in Raqqa from June to October 2017, Iran Press reported citing the official website of Amnesty International.

According to a report released by Amnesty International, Thousands of civilians were killed or injured in the US-led Coalition’s offensive to rid Raqqa of IS, whose snipers and mines had turned the city into a death trap.

"Many of the air bombardments were inaccurate and tens of thousands of artillery strikes were indiscriminate, so it is no surprise they killed and injured many hundreds of civilians," the report said.

Amnesty: US-led coalition reduced Syria's Raqqa to rubble

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011.

The so-called US-led coalition of more than 70 countries has been conducting military operations in Syria and Iraq which according to the coalition were aimed against the ISIS. This is while the coalition's operations in Syria are not authorized by the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad or the UN Security Council.

The Syrian media have frequently reported about civilian casualties as a result of the strikes.

The Syrian government has called on the United Nations to hold those responsible for the civilian casualties accountable and put an end to the coalition's unauthorized presence on Syrian territory.
