Iran Press/ America: An establishment leftist and a newcomer businessman appeared to capture the top two spots in Ecuador’s presidential election on Sunday in a campaign cycle centered on voters’ frustration with the country’s soaring gang and drug cartel violence.
Luisa González, backed by a former socialist president, and the political outsider Daniel Noboa received the highest percentage of ballots, with 84 percent of the vote counted. They will compete in a runoff election on Oct. 15.
A candidate needed 50% of the vote, or 40% support, with a 10-point lead over their closest rival to win.
