Syria’s representative to the UN, Bashar al-Jaafari, has said Israel's occupation has brought insecurity and instability to the region and the world must intervene to stop this occupation which has gone on for too long.

Iran Press/Middle East: “Syria renews its firm stance in support of the Palestinian people’s right of self-determination and the establishment of their independent state with the city of Al-Quds as its capital,” Bashar al-Jaafari, said on Thursday in a speech on the UN Security Council Open Debate on the Middle East.

According to SANA news agency, Al-Jaafari stressed that Israel still occupies the Syrian Golan Heights where Syrian citizens are still suffering from Israel's hostile and repressive practices.

He also said Israel has provided help and support to terrorist organizations which are active in Syria.

He went on to say that the Israeli aggression on Syria is clear evidence that Israel moved into a new phase of practicing terrorism, in addition to smuggling members of the so-called “the white helmets” to the states that sponsored them.

Damascus: Syria sovereign right on the occupied Golan is non-negotiable

Israel took control of 1,200 square kilometers of the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Six Day War and annexed it in 1981 in an illegal move that was never recognized internationally.

The Israeli regime has built tens of illegal settlements in the area since its occupation and has used the territory to carry out a number of military operations against the Syrian government.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier in this month during a visit to the occupied territory that the international community should recognize as “Israeli territory” the Golan Heights.

Netanyahu claimed that if Israel withdraws from the occupied Golan, the regime will find itself with Iran and the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah on the “shores of the Kinneret (sea of Galilee)” in the northern part of occupied territories.

As Syria has been struggling with foreign-backed militancy since 2011, the Israeli air force has carried out regular airstrikes against the Syrian army and government targets across the country.

Addressing the 73rd UN General Assembly, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said Israel supported terrorist groups in southern Syria through “direct military intervention” and repeated attacks against the Arab republic.

Tel Aviv has frequently attacked military targets inside Syria in an attempt to prop up terrorist groups that have suffered a series of defeats at the hands of Syrian government forces.

Tel Aviv has also carried out sporadic strikes against Syrian forces to blunt their advances against terrorists.

The Syrian army has also repeatedly seized huge quantities of Israeli-made weapons and advanced military equipment from the militant groups.
