US asks UNSC meeting on Ukraine

The United States has asked the United Nations Security Council to meet publicly on Monday to discuss the Ukraine issue.

Iran PressAmerica: The UN Security Council has met dozens of times over the crisis in Ukraine since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

Any Security Council member could call for a procedural vote to block the meeting. A minimum of nine votes are needed to win such a vote and China, Russia, the United States, Britain and France cannot wield their vetoes. UN diplomats said any attempt to stop the meeting on Monday would likely be defeated.

the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Thomas-Greenfield, on Thursday, pointing to the station of Russi'a troops near the border with Ukraine said: "The council's full attention is needed now, and we look forward to direct and purposeful discussion on Monday."

According to the Telegraph newspaper citing informed sources, the British government was considering deploying hundreds of troops in Eastern Europe to help Kiev in the event of a Russian attack on Ukraine.
