Iranpress / America- Speaking with reporters returning with him from an Asian trip, Pompeo said the White House would detail implementation of the measures on Monday morning.
“It’s an important part of our efforts to push back against Iranian malign activity,” he claimed. “The United States is going to enforce these sanctions,” Pompeo told reporters, cited by Reuters.
A U.S. Treasury official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said to Reuters that so-called "snapback" sanctions will be reimposed at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Tuesday.
Iran's Central Bank announced it will open currency markets
The first batch of US sanctions is set to target Iran's purchase of US dollars, trade in gold and precious metals, coal, cars and industrial-related software.
On May 8, US President Donald Trump pulled out of the 2015 multinational deal and announced re-imposition of the highest level of sanctions and other economic penalties on Iran.
Washington has since told countries they must stop buying the OPEC producer's oil from November 4 or face financial consequences.
Ahead of new US sanctions against Tehran, Iran's Central Bank governor Abdolnaser Hemmati said on televised interview that Iran has no problem and the same day that US impose sanction, Iran open its economy.
Iran's Central Bank announced Sunday it will open currency markets, allowing exchange office to buy and sell hard currencies for purposes such as foreign trade.
Iranian president Hassan Rouhani also has predicted that US pressure and threats can be turned into an opportunity for development, progress and growth.
Besides sanctions, Trump administration is pursuing regime change in Iran. Referring to recent riots in some cites in Iran, Pompeo claimed that Iranians are not happy and US want them to have a strong voice in who their leadership will be.
Last month US Secretary of State talked about a "maximum pressure campaign" targeting Iran that will support protests in this country.
Pompeo along with US national security adviser, John Bolton has been a vocal critic of the Iran and the internationally negotiated Iran nuclear deal of 2015 and advocated immediate regime change.
