House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced plans for Congress to establish an outside and independent commission to investigate the facts and causes related to the attack on the US Capitol on January 6.

Iran Press/America: US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says Congress will establish an "outside, independent" commission to investigate the 6 January attack on the US Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump.

In a letter to lawmakers, she said the commission would be modeled on the inquiry into the 11 September 2001 attacks on New York and the Pentagon.

"We must get to the truth of how this happened," she said.

Former President Trump was acquitted by the Senate of inciting the violence.

The Senate verdict Saturday, with its 57-43 majority falling 10 votes short of the two-thirds needed to convict Trump, hardly put to rest the debate about the Republican former president’s culpability for the Jan. 6 assault.

But Democrats and some Republicans have backed an independent probe into the riots, which left five people dead.

On January 6, the US Congress was counting the votes of the Electoral College to approve the results of the November 3 presidential election, after several US lawmakers protested the Arizona vote, former US President Donald Trump called on his supporters to stage protests.

Trump supporters, however, stormed Congress in large numbers and, after clashing with security forces, made their way into the building and its various rooms. Five people, including a police officer, were killed during the attack.
