US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi scoffed at the cowardly Senate Republicans who voted to acquit Donald Trump of inciting the Capitol siege

Iran Press/America: "What we saw in the Senate today (Saturday) was a cowardly group of Republicans who apparently had no other option and were afraid to defend their work", Pelosi said.

The Democrats have failed to gain enough Republican votes to impeach Donald Trump following the shortest impeachment trial in American history.

According to US media outlets, the conviction of the former president required a two-thirds majority, but the final vote of 57 to 43 meant the Senate fell short by 10 votes.

Among those who voted in favor of Trump's guilt were seven Republican senators.

Trump was impeached in the House of Representatives in 2019 on charges of "abuse of power" and "sabotage of Congress," but was acquitted in Senate.

The acquittal comes more than a month after a mob of Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol as lawmakers were counting the electoral results that certified Trump's loss. Five people died in the riot, including a police officer. Two other officers later killed themselves. 219
