The US Senate on Saturday acquitted former President Donald Trump on an impeachment charge of inciting an insurrection.

Iran Press/America: The Democrats have failed to gain enough Republican votes to impeach Donald Trump following the shortest impeachment trial in American history.

According to US media outlets, the conviction of the former president required a two-thirds majority, but the final vote of 57 to 43 meant the Senate fell short by 10 votes.

It should be noted that impeachment charges are political, not criminal. An impeachment acquittal essentially means the Senate did not find cause to remove a president from office.

The acquittal comes more than a month after a mob of Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol as lawmakers were counting the electoral results that certified Trump's loss. Five people died in the riot, including a police officer. Two other officers later killed themselves.
