Iran’s Foreign Ministry issued a strongly worded statement condemning a recent European Parliament resolution on the country’s internal developments, calling it “interventionist, irresponsible, and based on false claims.”

Why it matters:

The exchange highlights growing tensions between Tehran and European institutions, which have increasingly criticized Iran’s handling of the U.S.-Israeli-backed domestic unrest.

The big picture:

On January 8-9, terrorist armed elements supported by the U.S. and Israel launched a terrorist operation in several cities in Iran. Setting public property and killing security defenders and civilians, they attempted to raise the casualties, paving the way for a U.S. attack on Iran. According to Iranian officials, this terrorist operation led to 3,117 fatalities, of whom 2,427 are martyrs.

What we're hearing:

The Iranian Foreign Ministery accused the European Parliament of repeating “baseless allegations” about recent events in Iran and violating core principles of international law, including respect for national sovereignty.

It said many European lawmakers have supported U.S. sanctions and cooperated with Israel, pointing out that this undermines their “moral authority” to speak on human rights.

The statement mentioned that the resolution relies on “fabricated narratives” from media linked to Israel and U.S. hardline groups, while ignoring evidence that “terrorist elements,” supported by the U.S. and Israel, were involved in violent incidents in Iran.

Iran notes that the resolution distorts facts and contradicts the UN Charter by interfering in the country’s internal affairs.

Also:

The Foreign Ministry warned that any “illegal or interventionist” action targeting Iran’s armed forces or security institutions will be met with reciprocal measures, placing responsibility for consequences on European lawmakers.
