Why it matters:
The Israeli strike targeted Hamas delegation in Qatar, which has been mediating ceasefire talks in the Gaza war. The attack just spoiled efforts to reach ceasefire in Gaza.
The big picture:
Qatar has played a key role in prisoners-exchange negotiations and Gaza ceasefire talks. The country was targeted by the Israeli on Wednesday. Yet the UNSC statement, however, stopped short of naming Israel as the direct perpetrator of the attack on Qatar.
What they’re saying:
Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani held the Israeli regime accountable for sabotaging peace efforts: “It is trying to perpetuate the suffering of the Palestinian people.”
Acting U.S. Ambassador Dorothy Shea echoed Donald Trump’s criticism of the strike, calling it “unfortunate” and not aligned with U.S. or Israeli interests.
Algeria’s UN envoy slammed the UNSC's muted response: “This very council remains constrained, unable even to name the aggressor.”
Between the lines:
The U.S. typically shields Israel at the UN. Its support for the condemnation signals growing frustration within the Trump administration over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s unilateral military decisions.
Israeli regime has killed more than 64,000 people since the beginning war on Gaza in October 2023 under the pretext of destroying Hamas Resistance group. Furthermore, the Israeli regime has failed to free the rest of the Zionists taken captive during the Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.
What’s next:
Despite the strike, Qatar says it will continue its mediation efforts, while mulling over a due collective response to the Israeli regime's aggression.
