Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Friday strongly condemned Israel’s decision to occupy the Gaza Strip and forcibly displace nearly one million Palestinians from Gaza City and northern areas to the south, calling it a “crime against humanity.”

Why it matters:

As the situation in Gaza getting worse, the statement by the world’s largest intergovernmental Muslim organization also proves one of the worst humanitarian crises in recent history and shows growing international pressure on Israel to halt its operations in Gaza.

The big picture:

Israel’s expanded military campaign across the Gaza Strip, combined with mass forced displacement, has drawn international criticism and increased the risk of regional escalation.

According to World Health Organization around 12,000 children aged under five in Gaza are suffering from acute malnutrition, and hunger-related deaths are rising.

Key points:

  • OIC described Israel’s actions in Gaza as part of a broader pattern of “genocide, destruction, starvation, and siege.”
  •  The organization called these actions “a flagrant breach of international humanitarian law” and a defiance of UN resolutions and the International Court of Justice's orders.
  • OIC urged the UN Security Council to take immediate and decisive steps to impose a permanent ceasefire, guarantee unrestricted humanitarian aid access, and provide international protection for Palestinians.
