Tehran (IP) - The governor of the Central Bank of Iran stated that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) should respond to Tehran's request for having access to emergency resources to deal with COVID-19, without being influenced by political lobbying and US pressure.

Iran Press/Iran News: Abdolnaser Hemmati announced on Wednesday that Iran has taken appropriate steps in the process of fighting the coronavirus relying on its legal resources, adding that however; illegal US sanctions would prevent Iran from having access to its resources abroad.

Following the COVID-19 outbreak, Iran applied for a loan from the IMF, but with the opposition of the United States, Iran's name was removed from the list of borrowers of this fund.

Eight months after the outbreak, the International Monetary Fund has not yet responded to Iran's request.

At the pick of the fight against the coronavirus, the United States has intensified economic sanctions against the Iranian people and even prevented the import of medicine and the release of Iranian legal funds in some countries.

This US action is another demonstration of the destructive approach of unilateralism that directly targets the lives and health of the Iranian people, which is also a violation of basic human rights principles.

The independent role-playing of influential international bodies is expected by world public opinion, and at a critical juncture in the fight against the coronavirus, US unilateralism undermines the IMF's expertise and function.

The International Monetary Fund has three important tasks: first, to monitor the financial and economic developments of its 189 member countries; second, to advise the IMF member countries; and third, to provide short-term loans and assistance to countries in financial difficulty.

As the coronavirus continues to plague the world, collective cooperation and emergency financial assistance are essential to success in the fight against the pandemic, and sanctions should not affect humanitarian business.

The fight against the coronavirus has raised the cost of countries, and new financial resources are needed to fight this deadly virus, and this is where the special task of the third International Monetary Fund to provide loans to the corona-stricken member countries makes sense.

Despite the impact of US political pressure and sanctions on the International Monetary Fund, medical products have been produced in Iran to fight the coronavirus, including various types of corona detection kits, ventilators, etc. through the efforts of the Iranian scientific community and knowledge-based companies.

As one of the founding members of the International Monetary Fund, Iran is at the forefront of the fight against the coronavirus along with the international community.

The IMF's assistance and cooperation affect the quality of this fight and, as a result, make the global fight against COVID-19 more effective.

As the governor of the Central Bank of Iran recently told the Managing Director of the IMF, the coronavirus is a global crisis and the need for global cooperation has never been so excessive, and no country is safe from this crisis unless all countries are safe.
