Iran Press/ Middle East: "It was highlighted that there is the need to achieve settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict as soon as possible through establishing direct negotiations between the sides under the auspices of the Quartet," the statement reads.
At a teleconference of the Middle East Quartet of international mediators (Russia, the United States, the United Nations, and the European Union), the Russian side stressed that the process on normalizing inter-state relations in the Middle East is in the framework of a principal approach of Russia, which is interested in further developing multifaceted ties with all countries of the region as well as in establishing here a firm and all-encompassing peace," the ministry said.
During the meeting, Vladimir Safronkov noted that reliable stabilization in the Middle East would be impossible without a fair solution to this issue on an international and legal basis in accordance with the resolutions of the Security Council and the UNGA-initiated solutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
In this regard, Safronkov informed his colleagues in the Quartet about the measures taken by Russia with the goal of contributing to restoring Palestine’s national unity on the political platform of the Palestine Liberation Organization recognized as the only legal representative of the Palestinian people.
The teleconference of special representatives was held at Russia’s initiative.
EU Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process Susanna Terstal, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov, and Assistant to the US President and Special Representative for International Negotiations Avi Berkowitz also took part in the meeting.
The participants of the event agreed to continue contacts in the format of the Quartet aimed at promoting the Middle East settlement process.
