Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday called for an immediate ceasefire as fighting raged between Armenian and Azerbaijani Republic forces over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Iran PressEurope: Putin discussed the conflict which has lead to serious casualties with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and called for the ceasefire, the Kremlin said.

The clashes broke out on September 27, re-igniting a decades-old conflict between the ex-Soviet neighbors over Karabakh and threatening to draw in regional powers Russia and Turkey.

The conflict between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region began in 1988. It escalated into a military war in 1992, which resulted in the occupation of the Nagorno-Karabakh region of the Republic of Azerbaijan and seven neighboring cities by Armenian forces.
