Tehran (IP) - Senior Assistant to the Iranian Foreign Minister for Special Political Affairs Ali-Asghar Khaji and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Syria, Geir Pedersen stressed the importance of the continuation of political talks on the Syrian constitution and the work of the constitutional committee to achieve a final settlement of the Syrian crisis.

Iran PressIran news: Khaji and Pedersen discussed over the telephone on Saturday the political process and the activities of the Syrian Constitutional Committee.

The two sides stressed the importance of advancing the political dialogue and continuing the constitutional committee’s work to achieve a final settlement of the Syrian crisis within the framework of respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

On September 16, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Syria also spoke by telephone with Senior Assistant to the Iranian Foreign Minister for Special Political Affairs on issues related to Idlib, the Syrian constitutional committee, and the difficult humanitarian situation in the country.

The two sides called on the international community to help the Syrian people, citing the difficult humanitarian situation, especially amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The members of the constitutional committee, which took almost two years of consultations to be formed, seek to reform the Arab country's constitution before it is put to the vote of the Syrian people.

Representatives of the Syrian government and opposition met in early November last year to discuss a future constitution, part of plans for a political settlement to end eight and a half years of war.
