Students walked out of classes in Fort Collins on Tuesday to show support for tighter gun laws in the wake of the Florida shooting that left 17 people dead.

There have been several walkouts by students across the country since the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, to push for stricter gun control.

The US also has by far the highest number of privately owned guns in the world. Estimated in 2007, the number of civilian-owned firearms in the US was 88.8 guns per 100 people, meaning there was almost one privately owned gun per American and more than one per American adult.

Between 2014 and 2017, 56,755 Americans were killed by guns, including 2,710 children under the age of 12.

Mass shootings actually make up a small fraction of America’s gun deaths, constituting less than 2 percent of such deaths in 2013.

Partisanship and the power of the gun lobby The National Rifle Association of America (NRA), has helped derail several recent attempts in Congress to pass measures that would impose restrictions on the sale of firearms.
