Zarfi urged UN to end US inhuman sanctions

Tehran (IP) - Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif in a letter to Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, slammed the US inhuman sanctions against Iran which hinders countering Coronavirus outbreak and called for it to end.

Iran PressIran news: Mohammad Javad Zarif, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, sent a letter to Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations. He also sent its copies to the heads of all international organizations and his counterparts around the world. The letter called for the end of US government sanctions, a major obstacle to combating the Coronavirus outbreak in Iran.

Zarif emphasized in this letter that despite the scientific capability and commitment of the Iranian health system to combat Coronavirus outbreaks, US sanctions on legal trade in addition to recent preconditions the US authorities devised to ban the sale of drugs, medical equipment and humanitarian goods, efforts to combat the prevalence of Covid-19 in Iran have faced serious obstacles.

Iran's minister of foreign affairs said the impact of secondary sanctions on the sale of oil as well as other exports by the private sector have led to reducing the government's ability to subsidize Iranian citizens' basic commodities, and also reducing the capacity of the private sector for production and employment.

He added: "There are multilevel sanctions on the financial, transportation, insurance and banking sectors to prevent the sale of medicine and medical equipment to Iran, noting that failing to provide navigation equipment and software used by Iranian airlines crippled civilian airlines and the US companies blocking the use of information technology to curb the prevalence of Covid-1 are examples of US actions that is partly rooted in the inactivity of the international community against the illegal actions of the US government.

At the end, Zarif called for the immediate cessation of the US government's economic terrorism against the Iranian people and emphasized the duty of the United Nations and its member states in keeping with the demands of the Iranian people and government to halt the US government policy, and it is requested from the Secretary-General to publish the letter as a document of the General Assembly and the Security Council.
