Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaki

The office of Nigeria's top Shia cleric Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky announced that despite his deteriorating health, prison officials have denied him access to doctors.

Iran Press/Africa: In a Twitter message, his office quoted visitors of the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) saying that he is in serious health conditions.

Last December, hospital sources said X-rays showed there were still pieces of shrapnel left inside his body, relating to the time he was assaulted and fired upon by the Nigerian Army in December 2015.

"As can be seen from the photographs in the report, a bullet of the Nigerian terrorist army blew away his left eye completely, blinding him in one eye," his relatives said in a statement.

Sheikh Zakzaky was detained without trial for two years after his arrest in December 2015 until a Nigerian court made false charges against him in 2018.

He has been held in detention since December 2015 and was charged just in April 2018 with unlawful assembly and disruption of the public peace, allegations that are rejected by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN).

In 2016, Nigeria’s federal high court ordered his unconditional release from jail following a trial, but the government has so far refused to set him free.

Human rights organizations have repeatedly called for the release of Nigeria's Shiite leader.
