Iran's basketball team has claimed its first victory in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup, after defeating Group N rival, Angola 71-62.

Iran press/Iran news: In a classification round match-up between Iran and Angola, the towering Iranians had a rather sloppy ball-play up to half-time, which yielded 11 turnovers, and a 29 to 28 on the score sheet in favor of Angola.

But it was a different story from then on, as Iran took a 4-point advantage in the third quarter, before routing the 11-time African champions in the final quarter 23-17, reported Iran press.

Samad Nikkhah Bahrami shot the lights out with 5 out of 6 shots from the outside, scoring a total 21 points to lead Iran to Victory.

Carlos Morais bagged 17 points for Angola, reported Iran press. Iran will face its Asian rival the Philippines in 17th–32nd Classification on Sunday in Group N.

The 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup is the 18th tournament of the FIBA Basketball World Cup for men's national basketball teams.

The tournament will also act as the qualification for the 2020 Summer Olympics, which will take the top two teams from each of the Americas and Europe, and the top team from each of Africa, Asia and Oceania, alongside the tournament's host Japan.
