Iran is ranked 9th in the world in terms of the capacity of its thermal power stations, according to the country's ministry of energy.

Iran Press/Iran News: The official website of Iran's energy ministry announced on Saturday that currently, thermal power stations with an 80.8 percent share of generated electricity are in the first place among Iran's power stations, Iran Press reported.

In thermal power stations, thermal energy is converted into electricity. In thermal power station heat energy is converted to electric power. Water is heated, turns into steam and spins a steam turbine which drives an electrical generator, producing electricity.

In Iran; Gas, Steam and Combined cycle power plants with a capacity above 25 megawatts (MW) are known as thermal power stations. 101/211/217
