Tabriz (IP) - On the occasion of Ashura, people in Tabriz, the capital of East Azerbaijan province, northwestern Iran, held mourning rituals in the Grand Bazar of the city, the largest indoor market in the world.

Iran PressIran news: Ashura is the 10th day of Muharram. In 61 AH (October 10, 680 CE), Imam Hussein (PBUH) and his faithful companions were martyred in the battle against the Kufa army led by 'Umar b. Sa'd. This day is significant for Shia due to what occurred in Karbala on this day.

More than 1,300 years ago, in 680 AD, Imam Hussein [AS], a grandson of Islam's Prophet Muhammad [PBUH], and his 72 companions were martyred in the Battle of Karbala, in southern Iraq, after fighting courageously for justice against the much larger army of the Umayyad caliph, Yazid I.

Yazid's troops then set fire to the tents of Imam Hussein's (AS) household, and in the evening, there were tents burnt as the sky went dark.

The Tabrizi people observe special things in the mourning rituals, one of which is the candle-lighting ceremony registered as Iran's intangible heritage.

In the ceremony, the people light candles in 41 mosques on Ashura night to symbolically light the tents of Imam Hussain (AS) and his household.
