Iran Press/ Europe: David Amess, 69, a member of parliament for Southend West in Essex, eastern England, was attacked at about midday at a meeting at the Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea, Reuters reported.
He had first entered parliament in 1983 and been MP for Southend West since 1997.
"A 25 year-old man has been arrested on suspicion murder after a man was stabbed in Leigh-on-Sea," Essex Police said in a statement.
The stabbing at a meeting with constituents echoed a 2010 incident when Labour lawmaker Stephen Timms survived a stabbing in his constituency office and the 2016 fatal shooting of Labour's Jo Cox just days before the Brexit referendum.
