Deputy Governor of Afghanistan's Faryab province 'Abdul Moqim Rasekh' on Tuesday announced that four people were killed and six others wounded in an attack by gunmen on the Bibi Ainneh mosque in the city of Maimana.

Iran PressAsia: Rasekh added: "The incident took place during last night's prayers, and the injured were taken to hospital for treatment."

Rasekh stated: "The purpose of the assailants is not yet clear, but it is said that a former jihadi commander was in this mosque during the prayer, and was killed during the incident."

Governor of Faryab province Naqibullah Fayek confirmed the death toll and injuries, saying: "Taliban should be regarded responsible for the attack since the group has always targeted civilians."

The Taliban attacked the National Security Directorate in the northern Afghan province of Samangan yesterday, killing 10 people and wounding 54 others, eight of whom are said to be in critical condition.

The US and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 under the pretext of combating terrorism and providing security, but since then, insecurity, terrorism, and drug production in Afghanistan have increased dramatically.  207/216
