Meanwhile, the IRGC naval forces issued a statement on Friday confirming that a British oil tanker, Stena Impero, has been impounded by the IRGC navy.

The statement added: "On Friday afternoon a British oil tanker, Stena Impero, was guided to the port of Bandar Abbas [in southern Iran] because it failed to observe international safety and pollution standards after a request was issued by the Ports and Maritime Organisation (PMO) of Iran.

The ship was guided to Bandar Abbas harbour where necessary checks are being carried out by Ports and Maritime Organisation (PMO) officials. The required investigations are being carried out.

There have also been suggestions that the 'Stena Impero' had been causing pollution by dumping oil residues in the Persian Gulf. 101/211
