On January 17, 2025, the Brazilian government announced the official accession of Nigeria as a partner country of BRICS, according to a statement from the Brazilian Foreign Ministry.
The Brazilian government highlighted that Brazil and Nigeria share common interests, as both are committed to strengthening cooperation among countries of the Global South and advocating for reforms in international organizations.
Brazil took over the presidency of BRICS from Russia on January 1. During the BRICS Summit held in Kazan, Russia, in October, it was decided to create a category for BRICS partner countries. The first countries to gain partner status included Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. Additionally, Indonesia was initially identified as a BRICS partner, but on January 6, Brazil announced that Indonesia would instead hold the status of a full member.
