Tehran (IP) - Islamic Republic Day is a public holiday in Iran observed on the twelfth day of the first Persian month of Farvardin, April 1st in the western calendar.

Iran PressIran news: The day celebrates the anniversary of the 1979 establishment of the Islamic Republic.

In February 1979, Islamic Republic's founder, Imam Khomeini returned to Iran after 15 years in exile and led the campaign to overthrow the Shah of Iran.

Two months later, the new government held a referendum on establishing the Islamic Republic based on a new constitution, replacing the Persian monarchy for 2,500 years.

On 12 Farvardin, the results of the referendum were announced, with 98.2% of the Iranian people voting in favor of an Islamic Republic.

Imam Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, introduced the morning of April 1 as the first day of God's rule and said: "April 1, which is the first day of God's rule, is one of the greatest religious and national holidays and the Iranian nation should celebrate this day. The day when the palace of 2,500 years of tyrannical rule collapsed and the evil domination disappeared forever, and the government of the oppressed replaced it."
