Iran's Foreign Ministry has urged the caretaker government of Afghanistan to announce the results of its investigations into the crimes committed in Mazar-e-Sharif against Iranian diplomats and journalists and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

On the anniversary of the martyrdom of Iranian diplomats and journalists in Mazar-e-Sharif, the Foreign Ministry highlighted that 26 years ago, on August 17, 1998, following the fall of the city to Taliban forces, eight Iranian diplomats and one journalist were killed in the Iranian consulate, a violation of diplomatic principles, international laws, and humanitarian obligations.

The Foreign Ministry also noted that United Nations Security Council Resolution 1267 condemned the attack on the Iranian consulate and the killing of its diplomats and a journalist as a clear violation of international law.

The statement emphasized that Iran reserves the right to pursue all aspects of this painful terrorist act and to respond on behalf of the Iranian people and the bereaved families.

The statement concluded with a renewed request for the Afghan government to provide the results of its investigations into the perpetrators of this act.
